Studying at the university of Bonn
Through seven separate faculties, the University of Bonn provides almost 80 different courses and subjects. At present, approximately 28,000 students and more than 4,000 academic and ancillary staff study, teach and work at our outstanding faculties.
The very fact that we at the University see ourselves as a research-led university also influences the level and orientation of teaching and studying. Our students are given the unique opportunity of actively taking part in research projects. Our comprehensive research-based approach to studying will unquestionably deliver a clear advantage to Bonn graduates when they enter the labour market. Similarly, those teaching at our institution will benefit greatly from such an experience. It is our strong belief that learning through research is the ideal way for exceptional academic and social performers to gain their qualifications.
The university has successfully set up international study programs and in addition also International Graduate Schools.
A large number of PhD students are able to benefit from working within the graduate colleges (Graduiertenkollegs) and graduate schools that the University of Bonn has been able to set up, thanks to the assistance of the DFG and other sponsors. Graduate colleges attach considerable importance to research-based education and consequently their graduates generally have more comprehensive training. Furthermore, on average, they receive their doctorates two years earlier than other doctoral candidates.
The University of Bonn was the first of Germany's large traditional universities to introduce a central graduation ceremony for all its graduates. As a result, this created a new university culture as regards their achievement.
At an illustrious ceremony on the Hofgarten lawns in front of the Baroque backdrop of the main building, graduates are presented with their diplomas in the presence of family, friends and many members of the University. Dressed in gown and mortar board, each graduate proudly wears the colours of his or her Faculty.
