European Integration

This course starts with the time right after the end of World War II. While Germany (mainly Western Germany before reunification) is at the center of this class it will focus on the European aspects of German Foreign Policy and international engagement. 
N.B.: If you want to add any topics you are interested in, please let me know. The class will focus on West German Foreign Policy when applicable. There will be introductory presentations by students of 20-25 min. which will then be discussed. Readings will be assigned if necessary

  1. The beginnings of German Foreign Policy – integration into the Western alliance after World War II (1945 - 1955)
  2. The founding of WEU, NATO, ECSC, EAC, EEC 
  3. Franco-German Friendship as “engine” of a common European Policy (1950s and 60s)
    German Foreign Policy in the 1960s  
  4. Making amends with Eastern Europe (Ostpolitik) – West Germany vis-à-vis East Germany, Poland, Soviet Union etc. (1970s)
  5. Peace Movement and “Track Two” decision (1980s)
  6. The “new” German Foreign Policy since reunification (1989/90 –
