Spring Program for Partner Universities

March 1 - 28th 2012: Since 1998, the University of Bonn has organised a special program for Waseda University in Tokyo and Keio University in Tokyo every March.

gruppe_cms.jpgThis course, which is intended to strengthen the partnership between the universities, was established in 1960 and is designed to give Japanese students a taste of German language, literature and regional studies over the course of a month.

This serves to enrich the connection between the universities, especially Waseda, which is sponsored by the Europazentrum (European Centre). The Europazentrum has been based in Bonn since 1991. Bonn is the birthplace of Beethoven and has developed into an lively academic town, thus making it particularly suitable for giving students a varied impression of German reality. Bonn's proximity to the centres of European politics enables residents to witness the developments in Europe as they take place.

General Information

The course is designed to give the students the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge of German language or to extend their already existing knowledge. A placement test at the beginning of the course will ascertain each participant's previous knowledge and is used to split the participants into small groups.

The language lessons take place in the morning in university workrooms. The programme is complemented in the afternoon by workgroups, which carry out activities such as "Language Learning Games", "The Cultural History of the Rhineland" or "Singing and Playing German Songs".

On Wednesdays and on the weekend, excursions are offered to nearby towns and cities, i.e. to Aachen or to a wine tasting in the Ahr Valley. A central component of the excursion programme is a several-day excursion to Berlin in order to find out about the coalescence process following the German reunification where it actually occured. The trip also aims to give participants an impression of the museum and theatre landscape of Germany's capital.
